Ever since my neighbors had a Croatian exchange student and ever since Heather and I had a Croatian chemistry TA we have wanted to go to Croatia. I had a week off of school due to Whitsun and Heather was done with school so in early June of 2003 we went to the Istrian peninsula to Pula and Rovinj.

Croatia has awesome weather and clear blue water. The beaches aren't like the sandy beaches in the Bahamas, instead there are short pine trees right up to the beach and then the beach itself is either round stones or large flat boulders.

On many of our previous travels we've dashed around taking in the sights, sounds, and experiences. On this trip we decided to slow it down and let the sights, sounds, and experiences come to us. Besides seeing dolphins, going on a fish picnic, and exploring caves, we did an exorbitant amount of beach lying, water swimming, book reading, and ice cream eating.

Here are some of the better pictures of the over 200 that we took.

Saturday, June 7th

This was our cabana/mobile home on the beach. We had the left half.

The first thing we did was go to the beach. The beaches are rocky not sandy and the first thing I did was build a house. Just ignore the guy in the thong in the background and it is like a Roman structure.

This is the view a few paces from our cabana.

That evening we played chess late into the evening with Vladimir, the Russian from Moscow.

Sunday, June 8th

Pula is 3000 years old and has a Roman gladiator arena. So we checked it out.

A view from the inside.

Me standing on a rocky cliff

Heather floating around on the 2 dollar raft we bought.

Somebody has got to do the dirty work. Notice the trees coming right up to the beach on the right. That is typical Croatian.

Heather on the way back to our cabana.

Tuesday, June 10th

We spent most of the day reading and cruising on a boat. We finished the day on the beach of this island. The nudist colony section is right behind us.

The second town we stayed in was Rovinj.

Wednesday, June 10th

We had a lot of laying on the beach action.

I think you know who these people are.

Thursday, June 11th

We traveled 5 hours with the bus to visit caves in Postojna, Slovenia.

Caves are cool, I want one in my house when I grow up.

That evening we went to Ljubljana in Slovenia. We got some icecream under a willow tree.
